When I first arrived here in Dubai, I had no idea of the variety of options when it came to finding a place that aligned with my values and preference for greenery and a quite life. But after some research, I found lots of areas that suited us down to the ground. As one of the most sought-after destinations for expatriates and locals alike, choosing where to live in Dubai can be a daunting task. From luxurious high-rises to serene suburban communities, the city offers a diverse array of neighbourhoods to suit every lifestyle. In this guide, I'll explore some of the key areas of Dubai real estate, highlighting their unique benefits.
Bright and Buzzing
Downtown Dubai is like the flashy heart of the city, where everything seems to be happening at once. You've got the towering Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Fountain, and a shopping scene that can make even the most seasoned shopaholic giddy.
Living here is all about convenience. Want to grab a quick bite at a fancy restaurant? No problem. Need to shop till you drop? Just head to The Dubai Mall. And the Dubai Metro makes it a breeze to zip around the city.
Although green spaces are a bit hard to come by in this are, Burj Park is a leafy leisure area at the base of the Burj Khalifa to escape the hustle and bustle. Mostly apartment buildings, Downtown can cater for most budgets, depending what you want in terms of facilities. Most buildings have a shared gym and pool, but it's worth checking these facilities are adequate for your needs during viewings.
Dubai Marina is like the cool kid on the block – effortlessly stylish, always buzzing with energy, and offering some of the best views - sleek skyscrapers lining the waterfront, yachts bobbing in the marina, and at the right height and vantage point, you might even manage a palm view.
Living in Dubai Marina has world-class dining options, trendy bars, and luxurious spas right at your doorstep. Whether you're in the mood for a leisurely brunch or a night out on the town, there's never a dull moment here.
Getting around is easy, thanks to multiple tram stops linking up with the Dubai Marina Metro stop. And if you're craving some sun and sand, JBR Beach is just a stone's throw away – perfect for lazy weekends or meeting your friends.
Don't be fooled by the small yet mighty Marina Mall where you can get that much needed retail therapy without the crowds.
Traffic-wise, it's variable. Some areas are generally quite free-flowing, but there are a few pinch points, where it can be challenging, especially at certain times of the day. It's worth spending time in the area to get to know which roads are a headache.
Jumeirah Beach Residences (JBR) is a vibrant waterfront community where urban living meets seaside serenity. Picture yourself living in a sleek high-rise overlooking the sparkling waters of the Arabian Gulf, with pristine beaches and a lively promenade right at your doorstep. The views from some of the apartment buildings is great, you can see over The Palm and observe the sky divers floating down in their parachutes.
When it comes to dining and entertainment, you'll be spoiled with a diverse array of options
Despite the area being popular with tourists, there is a community-oriented atmosphere in JBR, with plenty of parks and playgrounds within each of the clusters, and you'll often see people out for their personal training sessions in the area.
If you're environmentally conscious and wondering about the recycling options, if you ask at the concierge desk, they will direct you on how to recycle in these buildings - it is possible!
Transportation is a breeze, thanks to convenient access to the Dubai Tram, making it easy to explore the rest of the city. However, the traffic in the area can be terrible, especially at rush hour, so bear this in mind if you need to commute. However, the tram network is really a game changer here as you can get well out of the area for just a few dirhams and it connects to the metro, so you can get to Downtown in just 30-40 minutes.
Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) is a vibrant waterfront community in Dubai, offering a perfect balance of urban convenience and natural beauty. Residents enjoy easy access to dining, and entertainment options.
However, JLT also provides moments of tranquility with its large parks and serene lakeside promenades. It's a bit like a toned down version of the marina, but without the yachts and a bit less glam.
There are some very nice restaurants and cafes in JLT, so a must for after work drinks, or a date night.
Transportation is convenient with access to the Dubai Metro and bus routes and the promenade has a specific lane for cyclists and scooters. JLT is generally much quieter than the Dubai Marina, but you can get over the metro overpass to easily access the more vibrant areas, so it's a good value option if you still like to visit the city scene, but don't necessarily want to live there.
Tranquility and Calm
The Meadows and The Springs are intertwined in the Emirates Living community. Here, spacious villas are nestled amongst lush greenery and tranquil lakes, creating an idyllic setting for residents seeking a relaxed lifestyle.
The Bedrooms are spacious and these villas have ample gardens in comparison to some of the more modern developments. There are shared community facilities, from tennis & basketball courts, swimming pools to parks for the kids, and outdoor gyms for the grown-ups. With convenient access to shopping centres and a number of dining options, daily errands are hassle-free.
If you're interested in animals, the lakes have a variety of "wildlife" - terrapins, ducks, parrakeets, other colourful birds and there are cats strolling about too.
Despite its suburban charm, it's close to some of the main roads giving easy and quick access to the city's amenities and attractions - just 15 minutes by cab to Dubai Marina and 25 minutes to Downtown.
Living in Sustainable City is a long way from the hot spots of Dubai. It seamlessly blends modern comfort with eco-conscious living. From the moment you step foot into this community, you're greeted by lush green walkways, meandering from the Plaza, past the duck pond and the swimming pools, all the way to the other end of the development where there's a tennis court and football pitch.
The properties are spacious and well laid out and have well proportioned gardens and, for the eco-conscious, each property is equipped with solar panels.
Whether it's through community gardening projects, recycling initiatives, or neighbourhood events, there's a real sense of community.
Arabian Ranches was recommended to us when we first started our house search. It's a verdant community offering an idyllic retreat for families seeking tranquility and luxury, set against the backdrop of lush green landscapes, serene lakes, and winding pathways, with a golf course right in the middle of the estate.
One of the most enticing aspects of life in Arabian Ranches is the abundance of recreational amenities available to residents, including community parks, swimming pools, and tennis courts, providing endless opportunities for outdoor recreation and relaxation.
The mall has a number of cafes and restaurants, a medical centre and supermarket, all the conveniences.
Bigger Budget

The area consists of a number of low-rise apartment buildings, which are sleek in design and have a feel of quiet luxury and a centre restaurants, cafes and boutiques.
Choosing a place to live in an unfamiliar city is a very daunting task, especially when you're pressed for time. It might help to make a list of all the things you need and want from your home and make sure you're ticking all your boxes.
Another thing that helped me when I was feeling very overwhelmed with the decision, was to close your eyes and imagine living in your new home:
what do you want to feel?
what do you want to be doing?
what do you want to hear?
where will you need to go?
how will you be spending your time?
Remember, your home is your sanctuary. No matter what happens, or how you're feeling about the rest of your move, when you're at home, you're glad, safe, calm and happy.
Most importantly, you're not alone. With expat coaching I can help you organise your thoughts, overcome doubts and concerns and help you identify your perfect home. Sometimes all you need is sounding board, with a little expertise in problem solving and some knowledge of the area.
